New NASA space telescope carries the name of UNC alumnus James Webb

It’s among the most powerful scientific instruments ever built. The James Webb Space Telescope, which launched on December 25, is destined for a point a million miles from Earth where it will unfurl gold-plated mirrors and begin searching the heavens for secrets long kept from humanity. It bears the name of UNC graduate James E. Webb ’28 (A.B.Ed.). (UNC.edu)
