Tar Heel Olympians: Jim Beatty, 1960

Born in New York, Jim Beatty moved to Charlotte as a child. As a young athlete, he trained as a boxer, and soon began to run while delivering newspapers to help train. Not long after, he convinced his high school track coach to let him run the mile in meets. He quickly adapted to the new sport and won the state championship weeks after running his first race.
