Carolina's Unsung Heroes

When UNC locked down twice in the fall semester, a common theme of the experiences was the human reaction to care for each other in times of trouble. Beyond the University’s efforts to provide resources and support, faculty, staff, and students helped each other in a variety of ways. Here are some of the people who made a difference for others. A comeback for Linda’s? Founder of famed Chapel Hill bar says it’s possible

The farewells for one of Chapel Hill’s legendary college bars may have been premature. Linda’s Bar & Grill appeared doomed to end its 47-year run on Friday night. But that closing might not be permanent. Reached on Monday, building owner and restaurant namesake Linda Williams said she plans to find a new tenant to run the place on Franklin Street. (AOL.com)

Daughters of late ESPN anchor Stuart Scott remember the legacy their father left for Black families

In the moments Sydni Scott has the desire to hear her father’s voice, the large body of work left behind — the legendary highlight reads, the “Boo-Yah” compilations, the “This is SportsCenter” shorts — gives her multiple options. UNC sophomore wins 'Jeopardy!' during second appearance, advances to tournament final

A UNC sophomore came from behind in dramatic fashion to win on Jeopardy on Tuesday night. It was Rotimi Kukoyi's second time on Jeopardy. He was invited back to participate in a second chance tournament with other near winners. Kukoyi was first on Jeopardy nearly six years ago when he competed in the Teen Tournament as a ninth-grader. UNC student set to appear on Jeopardy! for second time

A Carolina sophomore got a second go at what’s typically a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Rotimi Kukoyi’s appearance as the youngest contestant in the Jeopardy! quiz show’s Second Chance Tournament will air Jan. 9, more than five years after he competed in the Teen Tournament as a ninth-grader. Kukoyi’s invitation to return was a long time coming. (UNC.edu)

Kevin Guskiewicz leaves dual legacy of research, leadership at Carolina

Kevin M. Guskiewicz arrived at Carolina nearly 30 years ago. He was a neuroscientist determined to take the guesswork out of assessing a concussion’s impact on an athlete. Protocols resulting in part from his research are now widely used in high school and college sports and in the NFL. His work earned him a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant. (UNC.edu)

Linda's Bar & Grill's closure will not be permanent, namesake's daughter says

Linda's Bar and Grill, the 47-year-old restaurant that announced it will close Friday, is not shutting its doors permanently. Kim Scott, the daughter of Linda Williams, who owns the building that houses the restaurant and is the restaurant's original owner, said that she and her mother have been working to find a new owner to reopen the bar. Linda's Bar and Grill is closing its doors on Jan. 5 after nearly 50 years in business on Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill. "Breaks my heart," owner Christopher Carini said. Despite making a profit in 2023, the restaurant took on a lot of debt during the COVID-19 crisis, combined with people not going out as much anymore, according to Carini. (WTVD)
