UNC-Michigan Postgame Notes

Luke Maye scored 20-plus points for the fifth time in the first seven games with a game-high 27. It was the third time this season Maye has scored at least 25 points. Kenny Williams made three three-pointers and is now 17 for 30 from three-point range this season. Joel Berry had 17 points, passing York Larese for 47th place in school history with 1,288 points.

The Primary Break: UNC-VT Quick Takes

Quick statistical nuggets from UNC’s 91-72 victory over Virginia Tech. Both UNC’s 14 made 3s and 30 attempted 3s were season highs, topping the 12 and 27 against NC State. Justin Jackson’s 26 points pushed him past 1300 in his career. He moved by York Larese, Joe Forte, George Karl, and Kevin Madden, and now ranks 42nd on UNC’s career leaderboard with 1303.

UNC Great Larese Dies at 77

Former UNC basketball star York Larese, a first-team All-ACC selection for three straight seasons and second-team All-American, passed away on February 6, 2016, at age 77. Larese starred on Frank McGuire’s Tar Heel teams from 1959-61, averaging 18 points during his career and setting an ACC record by making 21 of 21 free throws against Duke in the 1959 Dixie Classic.

UNC great York Larese passes away

York B. Larese of Medford, formerly of Winchester, passed away on February 6, 2016 at age 77....As a 6'4" standout guard at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was a three-time All-ACC selection from 1959-61 and a second-team All-America as a senior. Nicknamed "the Cobra," for his singular style of shooting free throws, he shot the ball, with no pause, as soon as the official handed it to him.
