Scott Cherry out as High Point University head coach

High Point University athletics director Dan Hauser and head coach Scott Cherry have mutually agreed to a change in the head coach leadership of the men's basketball program. Cherry joined the HPU staff in 2009 and was the 11th head men's basketball coach in school history. He compiled an overall record of 146-134 with a 93-65 record in Big South play.

"How times have changed?!?!" former UNC guard Scott Cherry posted on Twitter. A captain on the 1993 UNC National Championship team, Cherry was at UNC 's 2017 ring ceremony on Saturday. Cherry, now the head coach at High Point University, posted a picture and that message contrasting the size of his 1993 ring with that of the ring that the 2017 team just received.

Tournament time is the most popular part of college basketball season. When the lights are the brightest it can seem like every shot is life or death. Scott Cherry learned a long time ago that’s not the case. Cherry, a Ballston Spa native who graduated from Saratoga Catholic in 1989, recently reflected on his time playing basketball at UNC and the lessons he learned from his former coach Dean Smith.

Over the years, a lot of people wrote letters to Dean Smith, and in a lot of cases, he wrote back. Scott Cherry is the basketball coach at High Point University but he was a senior captain on the 1993 Tar Heel team that won the national championship. Years later, he remembers a letter coach Smith wrote, at an important time in his life.

Having rallied from 16 down early in the second half and 10 down in the last 3:20, the Panthers overcame a tough situation in the last 10 seconds and pulled out an improbable 73-72 victory over Winthrop at the Millis Center.

High Point University head coach Scott Cherry has been named National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 3 Coach of the Year.  Cherry led the Panthers to their first outright Big South regular season title and first National Invitation Tournament (NIT) appearance in 2013-14.

Scott Cherry and DeUnna Hendrix of High Point were named the men’s and women’s basketball coaches of the year in the Big South Conference, and High Point’s John Brown and Kaylah Keys were named the men’s player of the year and women’s freshman of the year, respectively, in selections by head coaches and media panels. Cherry and Hendrix led their teams to regular-season league titles.

Scott Cherry has High Point on right path

Scott Cherry is used to winning. As a captain for the University of North Carolina, Cherry helped lead the Tar Heels to a national championship. He also made it back to the Final Four in 2006 as an assistant coach for George Mason. Then in 2009, the Ballston Spa native was asked to turn the men’s basketball program at High Point University into a winner.

High Point gives Scott Cherry contract extension

High Point University has signed head men's basketball coach Scott Cherry to a four-year contract extension that will run through the 2016-17 season, Athletic Director Craig Keilitz announced on Thursday. The Panthers won the North Division of the Big South this season, the program's first Big South title.

Brian Reese joins High Point men's basketball staff

Former UNC basketball standout Brian Reese has joined the High Point University men's basketball staff as assistant coach, head coach Scott Cherry has announced. Reese and Cherry were teammates on UNC's 1993 national championship team. "Brian is a tremendous addition and brings a wealth of knowledge to our staff," said Cherry.

Jeff Lebo faces fellow North Carolina alum Scott Cherry

The branches of the North Carolina coaching tree continue to blossom, and two will intertwine tonight at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. High Point’s first-year coach Scott Cherry and Auburn coach Jeff Lebo never played together at North Carolina, but the two are good friends. Playing under legendary coach Dean Smith seems to bring all UNC grads together.
