Chansky’s Notebook: A Circuitous Route

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey owes his job to Roy Williams. Brey, whose Fighting Irish host UNC Saturday, is in his eighteenth season at Notre Dame. In a sense, he owes a debt of gratitude to UNC’s coach. Had Williams taken the UNC job in 2000, Matt Doherty would have stayed at Notre Dame and who knows if Brey would have had the chance to coach the Irish.

Young Jalek Felton is growing into a Roy Williams point guard

Raymond Felton was a Matt Doherty recruit — his class anchored that championship run — but he was the first starting point guard under Roy Williams at Carolina, and he was a Roy Williams point guard like Ty Lawson, Kendall Marshall, Marcus Paige and Joel Berry. Now, Raymond's nephew Jalek is a Roy Williams point guard, or, he's on his way to becoming one.

UNC’s Disaster Relief Jamboree preview: ECU Pirates

One of the teams joining UNC in the Disaster Relief Jamboree Sunday is the East Carolina Pirates. Coached by former UNC guard Jeff Lebo, the Pirates return their top scorer and rebounder, Kentrell Barkley, and have an influx of new players on the roster. ECU assistant Doug Wojcik was formerly an assistant coach of Matt Doherty during his three seasons at Carolina.

Chansky’s Notebook: Perfect Time to Reset for Matt Doherty

Matt Doherty had almost fallen out of basketball after coaching stints at Florida Atlantic and SMU, following his short stay in Chapel Hill. Doherty had been working as a scout for the Indiana Pacers. Then, former UNC star player and now-acclaimed administrator Bernadette McGlade tapped Doherty as Associate Commissioner for Basketball at the A-10 Conference.

Atlantic 10 Hires Matt Doherty As Associate Commissioner

Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade announced Thursday the hiring of former basketball coach Matt Doherty to the position of Associate Commissioner for Men’s Basketball. A former men’s basketball student-athlete and coach, Doherty brings 27 years of college basketball experience to the A-10.

A look back at UNC's 1984 NCAA Tournament game versus Indiana

UNC meets Indiana in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday night. It will be the first postseason meeting between the two teams since 1984. That season a 28-2 Tar Heel team which included Michael Jordan, Kenny Smith, Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty and Brad Daugherty was ranked #1 and the top seed in the East Region. Indiana was the #4 seed led by Steve Alford.

NBA could've been a reality for Packers linebacker Julius Peppers

It was Feb. 6, 2001, against Wake Forest when Ronald Curry, the Tar Heels quarterback/point guard, threw that lob to Julius Peppers, a forward/defensive end. Matt Doherty isn’t sure if that’s the moment he knew Peppers could play in the NBA, but even today, his former coach said the 6-foot-7 Peppers was a legitimate NBA prospect in the making.

The Aggies and the Heels: a short history

Curtis Hunter and Matt Doherty were teammates on UNC Head Basketball Coach Dean Smith’s 1982-83 and 1983-84 teams. In 2000 each took a head coaching position with teams within the UNC system: Hunter at North Carolina A&T and Doherty at UNC-Chapel Hill. As was the custom then, and still today, members of the “Carolina Family” often wind up playing each other.

Top 5 UNC point guards in the Roy Williams Era: No. 2

No. 2 - Raymond Felton: A National Champion and one of UNC's all-time greats, Felton, while at the helm of the Tar Heels, revitalized the UNC basketball program from 2002-2005 A Matt Doherty recruit, Felton played two years under Roy Williams and helped the North Carolina coach win his first National Title in his second season in Chapel Hill.

Matt Doherty, Richard Vinroot: Dean Smith was a better man than coach

Shaking my head saying even after the man has passed away," said former player Matt Doherty. "He's still reaching out to his former players." Less than two months after he passed away, another story of Dean Smith's generosity surfaced. "Overwhelmed," said former player Richard Vinroot. "Why would he do that for us? We owe him, not the other way around."

The UNC-Duke rivalry, from the court to the bench

Duke and North Carolina renew their storied rivalry tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium. ESPN.com spoke with several participants in each shade of blue about both playing and coaching in what is arguably the most important matchup of the season for the respective schools. The Tar Heel voices are coach Roy Williams, Phil Ford, and Matt Doherty.

Williams, Doherty spoke with investigators; Rashad McCants did not

UNC coach Roy Williams and former UNC coach Matt Doherty both spoke with investigators looking into academic fraud centered around AFAM paper classes. But Rashad McCants — an outspoken player except when investigators came calling — did not cooperate. The AFAM classes were offered as far back as during Dean Smith’s tenure, but Smith and his successor, Bill Guthridge, were not available because of health reasons.

Art’s Angle: What Has Changed?

Rashad McCants’ sweeping allegations are hard to believe. Tar Heels under Dean Smith and Roy Williams had their own academic advisor and tutors, from the beloved Burgess McSwain, to Wayne Walden, to academic advisor Jenn Townsend. The only explanation I can muster is that there was a lapse during Matt Doherty’s three seasons running the program from 2000-2003.

The Best That Never Was?

The 1983-1984 Tar Heels were arguably the best team Dean Smith put on the floor in his 36 years in Chapel Hill. That UNC team featured five first-round NBA draft picks. four first-team All-Americans, and the national player of the year in Michael Jordan. The starting lineup featured Kenny Smith at the point, Jordan and Matt Doherty on the wings, and Sam Perkins and Brad Daugherty inside.

Did Matt Doherty ask Chris Paul to walk on at UNC?

Chris Paul's high school coach David Laton: "He actually grew up a North Carolina fan. That was his favorite basketball team growing up, but Matt Doherty was there at the time. Doherty told us, and I'm not saying it wasn't true, that they didn't have any more scholarships. When we visited the school he was trying to get Chris to pay his own way for a year. I knew that wasn't gonna happen."
