Chansky’s Notebook: World Travelers

Players who don’t have longevity in the NBA and go overseas to play have a far richer experience, if not in money than certainly in seeing, learning and knowing the world. Former Tar Heels like Tyler Hansbrough, Marcus Ginyard and 2005 NCAA championship member Jawad Williams have far better stories to tell, if not more money in the bank, than NBA players.

Marcus Ginyard: Late Night Starts Long Grind For The New

Marcus Ginyard: Before starting my eighth professional season here in Europe, I had the chance to join the Heels (as a bystander) for a 6 am conditioning test. The task was a 12-minute run, and it was the second attempt for a handful of freshmen. These young men were already learning a hard lesson that life on a Roy Williams team is spent in the fast lane.

Marcus Ginyard: Championship Memories – A View from Afar

Marcus Ginyard: I was on my couch in Northern Poland , where I’m currently playing. Tip-off was at 3:20 a.m. here in Europe. Set my alarm at 2:45 a.m. to give myself plenty of time to wake up and test my internet connection so I could stream the game on my computer. The biggest thing I remember from 2009 was just the overwhelming feeling of relief.

Marcus Ginyard: “Everyone has the will to win. Few have the will to prepare.”

Former UNC wing and 2009 NCAA champion Marcus Ginyard: The Tar Heels have more than enough experience to know how important this mindset is. Coach Williams has always focused on getting better every day, not only preparing yourself for your next opponent but also preparing for the crucial battles late in the season.

Marcus Ginyard: The Final Four is Different

Marcus Ginyard: I was blessed to experience the Final Four two years in a row, with two very different outcomes. Reaching the 2008 Final Four in San Antonio was a dream for us. We were used to being in the local and national spotlight, but the Final Four is, well, different. And 2009, of course, was an overwhelming landslide in our favor, but much in part because of our experience the year before.

Marcus Ginyard: My First of Four Wins at Duke

Marcus Ginyard: Coach Williams always talks about how your collegiate career can speed by, usually conveying the message with a snap of his fingers. It’s a simple gesture, but most appropriate. Some of the best moments of your life come and go before you can truly understand their importance. Marcus Paige, Brice Johnson and Joel James can attest to that.
