Chris Munnelly Named High Point Baseball Director of Player Development
High Point University baseball coach Craig Cozart named Chris Munnelly as the new Director of Player Development on Thursday. Munnelly is a former pitcher at North Carolina who played two seasons in the Houston Astros organization. "We are very excited to have Chris Munnelly join the coaching staff here at High Point University," Cozart said. "Chris is a man of high character who possesses extensive baseball experience."
Chris Munnelly adjusting to closer's role in minors
Chris Munnelly had a late start to his second season in professional baseball, but he has quickly settled into his new role as a closer with the Tri-City ValleyCats. Munnelly, who signed with the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent last June, started his season in Kissimmee, Fla., at extended spring training because the organization wanted him to focus on becoming a closer.

After being bypassed in Major League Baseball’s draft in June, Chris Munnelly is relishing his role in the Houston Astros organization as a shutdown relief pitcher. “So far, so good,” he said by telephone from Greeneville, Tenn. “I enjoy relieving. Munnelly — a former Forsyth Country Day pitcher from Lewisville — signed with the Houston Astros last week after a standout college career at North Carolina. Five Diamond Heels Named ACC All-Academic
North Carolina placed five Tar Heels on the 2013 ACC All-Academic Team on Monday, led by two-time honorees Benton Moss and Chris Munnelly. Moss and Munnelly were joined on the team by freshman Trent Thornton, sophomore Michael Russell and junior Kent Emanuel.

Trio Combine On One-Hitter In 2-0 Win Over Appalachian State
The trio of Reilly Hovis, Chris McCue and Chris Munnelly combined on the second one-hitter of the year Tuesday night as No. 2 North Carolina downed Appalachian State, 2-0. Hovis surrendered a two-out single in the first inning before settling in and tossing five scoreless frames in his fourth start of the year. The freshman right-hander struck out three as he improved to 2-0.

No. 1 North Carolina claimed a midweek sweep of visiting James Madison (20-25) on Wednesday with a 6-1 win in a rain-shortened contest that was called in the sixth inning. The Tar Heels improve to 44-4 on the year with the win as senior Chris Munnelly moves his record to 5-0. Munnelly threw five innings of one-run ball as he allowed two hits and struck out six.

Four North Carolina baseball players were named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team on Tuesday for their efforts in the classroom and on the diamond. Sophomores Brian Holberton and Shane Taylor were named to the squad for the second straight year, while junior Chris Munnelly and freshman Benton Moss also were named to the team.
