Going postal in the Coastal

UNC at Pittsburgh 12:30 Heinz Field: Series History - It’s a short history but actually pretty significant. North Carolina won the first meeting in 1974 against a Pitt team with Tony Dorsett, 45-29 – Chris Kupec and the Tar Heel offense never punted that day. The teams met again in 1978. The Tar Heels struggled to a 5-6 record in Dick Crum’s first season, but lost only 20-16 against a Pitt team featuring Hugh Green and Mark May.

When discussions focus on the best quarterbacks in UNC football history, names like Darian Durant, Chris Keldorf, Matt Kupec and, yes, T.J. Yates are the most likely to be considered. But although his statistics aren't as impressive as those record setters, Junior Edge's achievements under center at UNC in the early 1960s earned him a place in that elite group.

Dascenzo: Quarterback U? Don't look toward Chapel Hill

What is it exactly about North Carolina's history of never producing a quality NFL quarterback? Once I went searching for UNC signal callers who have made it in the pros, such names as these came up: Ronald Curry -- the Raiders took him in the seventh round in 2002 and liked his athleticism, but not as a QB. Chris Kupec drafted in 1975 by the Bills, Danny Talbott (1967 by the 49ers). Good college QBs, but not in the NFL. Jack Cummings (fourth round, 45th overall by the Eagles in 1960). Jeff Beaver in 1968.
