It was great. I enjoyed the competition."

For Monmouth's King Rice, emotions may play a role at UNC

This is not the first time King Rice will take his team to UNC (Wed., 7 PM, ESPNU), and it probably won't be the last. A generation ago, Rice patrolled Dean Smith's backcourt, helping push the 1991 Tar Heels to the Final Four. On New Year's Day 2012, Rice took his first Monmouth team to the Smith Center, complete with then-assistants Brian Reese and Derrick Phelps.

Illinois State names Brian Reese assistant basketball coach

Brian Reese learned from one of college basketball's coaching legends in the late Dean Smith. He knows what it's like to reach the top, too, as a starting small forward when UNC won the 1993 NCAA title. Reese believes he can share those experiences and help Illinois State reach its goals, too. The 44-year-old was named the Redbirds' newest assistant coach Tuesday.

King Rice, Brian Reese set for on-court reunion

King Rice's friendship with Brian Reese goes back a quarter-century to 1990 when Rice was a senior at UNC, Reese was a freshman, and together they helped the Tar Heels reach the 1991 Final Four. After all the years and all the memories together, what does Rice think it's going to be like coaching against Reese for the first time? "Funny," Rice said. "Brian is one of my closest friends."

King Rice's coaching tree received its first branch on Thursday. Hawks assistant coach Brian Reese will be named head coach at Division II Georgian Court University. Lessons Learned From Coach Dean Smith

Brian Reese, an assistant under King Rice at Monmouth and a member of the Tar Heels’ 1993 national championship team, remembers the emphasis not being placed on who scored the most points, but how many passes a player deflected, how many screens someone set, and how many offensive rebounds someone grabbed. If a player wanted to buck the system and show off some individual move in practice, Dean Smith would stop everything.

King Rice takes Hawks to Chapel Hill

When Monmouth University steps inside the building for a 3 pm contest against the Tar Heels, the Hawks will of course get booed. However, when they first step on the floor, one can imagine that the coaching staff may get quite the ovation. Head coach King Rice, along with assistant coaches Brian Reese and Derrick Phelps, are native sons of Chapel Hill. For those three, today is a homecoming.

Report card: Grading the coaching hires

Monmouth - In: King Rice; Out: Dave Calloway; Rice played at North Carolina and has been at Vanderbilt over the last few years as an assistant under Kevin Stallings. It’s a solid pick, but I’m still concerned with his staff. He hired a pair of former UNC players in Derrick Phelps and Brian Reese. Grade: B-

The Tar Heel newcomers—7-foot center Eric Montross, 6'10" power forward, Clifford Rozier, 6'8" small forward Pat Sullivan, 6'5" wing guard Brian Reese and 6'3" point guard Derrick Phelps—are crammed onto a single page in the Tar Heels' media guide, while a redshirt freshman who didn't see a single minute of playing time last season got an entire page to himself. Dean Smith can lead all manner of studhorses to Chapel Hill, but he won't let them drink until he's good and ready.
