Question of the CWS: What's a Tar Heel?

There’s been an interesting array of nicknames among the school's represented at the 2006 College World Series: Beavers (Oregon State), Yellow Jackets (Georgia Tech), Titans (Cal State Fullerton), Tigers (Clemson), Owls (Rice), Bulldogs (Georgia) and Hurricanes (Miami). But what’s a Tar Heel? According to my Google search, there are a few versions of where the moniker came from and they originated from the Civil War. (Salem Statesman Journal)
