Orange at the roots

In May 1953, athletic officials from UNC and six other schools from the Southern Conference gathered in Greensboro to form a new league. They didn't come together to create the nation's most powerful basketball conference, which eventually became the unintended consequence. Basketball wasn't even a thought to those athletic directors, at least not to anyone besides N.C. State's Roy Clogston, who had the biggest gym in the southeast with Reynolds Coliseum and the top coach outside of Kentucky's Adolph Rupp in Everett Case. (Chapel Hill News)
