UNC player's tragic death in 1971 ended 'tough-it-out' philosophy

Offensive lineman Bill Arnold never got to play in a varsity game at UNC-Chapel Hill. He didn't get to celebrate the 1971 ACC football title his teammates won in his honor. He didn't even earn a letter until his parents received one, posthumously, in 2002. But when he collapsed on the practice field 35 years ago today -- after a 1-hour, 45-minute workout in 87-degree heat without a water break -- he made an impact on Tar Heel football that still resonates.
