Cam Johnson Transfer Primer
Posted May 22, 2017
There have been several questions regarding Pitt shooting guard transfer Cam Johnson's eligibility status, particularly as it pertains to UNC. So it seems appropriate to offer a quick rundown on where things stand at the moment.
Cam Johnson has graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and has two years of eligibility remaining. Reports indicate that he would be interested in playing for UNC next season.
According to NCAA and ACC rules, because he has graduated, Johnson may transfer to any school he wishes and play immediately without having to sit out a year. Former UNC wide receiver T.J. Thorpe is a recent example of this as he graduated from UNC and transferred to Virginia only to play against UNC the following season.
The Pittsburgh athletic department has granted Johnson's request to transfer to any school he wishes. However, the Pitt administration has specified that he must sit out a year if he transfers to another ACC school. This is similar to a "non-compete" clause that some companies implement in their employee hiring agreements.
As of now, Pitt's one-year block on ACC schools remains in place but recent reports suggest that Roy Williams may be in discussions with Pitt coach Kevin Stallings (whose son played baseball at UNC) to hopefully get the one-year block lifted.
If Pitt does not lift the one-year block on ACC schools, then Johnson will likely transfer elsewhere. If the block is lifted, then the general feeling is that Johnson would likely end up in a Tar Heel uniform.
