For the second time in four years, North Carolina's Educational Foundation is embarking on a multimillion-dollar fundraising drive to supplement the salary of a new coach -- a move that raises questions about the role of boosters, and big money, in intercollegiate athletics. "No employee of a university should be beholden to some group outside of the university," said Murray Sperber, a professor emeritus at Indiana University and a leading authority on the role of college sports. "You look at the chain of command as to whose boss is whose, and it's not supposed to be the Rams."
