Butch Davis embraces Cherokee ancestry

Not a lot of people were surprised when was hired as the football coach at North Carolina. But very few knew that Davis is part Cherokee Indian and that he and his son are on the tribal roll of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. "My great grandfather (Zeke Proctor) on my mother's side was a full-blooded Cherokee," said Davis, 54, who was born in Tahlequah. "My grandmother was very diligent about keeping up with our heritage, and my family has followed up on that. I think on my roll certificate I am 5/32 Cherokee." (Asheville Citizen-Times)
