Remembering Dean Smith’s first game, and a lifetime of excellence

It was Dec. 2, 1961. North Carolina’s Tar Heels had just won their home opener, defeating Virginia 80-46. The Tar Heels’ new coach, Dean Smith, met with his team in the locker room, then he came out, looked around at a handful of us who had come looking for a quote or two for our stories and asked Bob Quincy, the sports information director, “What do I do now?”
