The Tar Heels have drawn penalty flags 38 times through four games, or 9.5 times per game. The average of 78 penalty yards per game is 11th-most nationally, tied with Saturday’s opponent, Virginia Tech. The 15 penalties committed Saturday at Clemson were the second-most in Tar Heel history, and the Tigers benefited: 22 points came either directly as a result of those penalties.
