Former Topeka mayor to honor Dean Smith with plaque at Topeka High

Former Topeka mayor Bill Bunten is spearheading an effort to place a memorial to his friend, 83-year-old legendary college basketball coach Dean Smith, at Topeka High School. Bunten said Tuesday he is commissioning a plaque that will be placed on the wall above the south entrance. The plaque will be made of black metal, with Smith’s face and a representation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
