Robert Woodard had just used 86 pitches over 6 and 2/3 innings to largely flummox the Rice Owls, one of the nation's hottest hitting teams. He had thrown curveballs in fastball counts and fastballs in curveball counts and then, just to keep the Owls loose, he had thrown changeups. Woodard had given the Tar Heels their second straight crucial quality start in the College World Series and allowed UNC to conserve the bullpen for tomorrow's do-or-die rubber match with Rice.
