Dean Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Wednesday more for what he did away from the basketball court than what he accomplished on it. He will always be defined by his influence on race relations, compassion for his fellow man and his unique role as teacher and life mentor. At the same time, he did have a pretty significant impact on the game itself.
