Chris Herren's five-year redemption

On Aug. 1, 2008, Chris Herren was told to consider himself dead. In hearing those sobering words, the derelict former basketball star started living again. Herren had been reluctantly granted a day’s reprieve from a Daytop Village drug rehab facility in Rhinebeck, N.Y., to see his son Drew’s birth that Friday.
