After three weeks of spring drills and 16 fall practices, new Tar Heels coach Butch Davis finally had enough evidence and confidence Thursday afternoon to name T.J. Yates the starting quarterback for UNC’s Sept. 1 opener against James Madison. But the announcement was nothing more than a one-game guarantee with a bold-lettered disclaimer. “Nothing’s etched in stone,” Davis said.
