Aleric Mullins, who played at East Wake High School after coming to North Carolina from Missouri, is a gifted defensive lineman. And gifted defensive linemen, more than one college football coach has said through the years, are the toughest, most valued recruits a program can land. Kids who weigh 300 pounds or more and can run the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds or faster and have a quick first step are as rare as progressive thinkers in the Bush White House.
