Tar Heels Hope To Return To Glory Under Davis

Since Mack Brown left for Texas in 1997, the Tar Heels regressed under a pair of failed coaches to become a regular among ACC also-rans. UNC is counting on Butch Davis, who rebuilt Miami into a power and took the Cleveland Browns to the NFL playoffs, to be the coach who can pick up where Brown left off. But without a proven quarterback or running back, and the remnants of a shoddy defense on his roster, Davis starts his first season cautioning against expecting too much.
