Tailback Holmes 'permanently separated' from Virginia Tech

Michael Holmes, who started five games at tailback last season for Virginia Tech, has been “permanently separated from the university” by a student judicial board, athletic director Jim Weaver said Tuesday morning. Holmes was charged with felony malicious wounding in connection with an April fight in downtown Blacksburg and last month was convicted of misdemeanor assault in the case. Holmes, fellow sophomore J.C. Coleman and redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds were the leading candidates to start at tailback in 2013.
