Three of Virginia Tech's assistant coaches have ties to UNC. Associate head coach and running backs coach Billy Hite played tailback for three seasons in Chapel Hill. He also began his coaching career with the Tar Heels back in 1974. Outside linebackers and strong safeties coach Jim Cavanaugh coached wide receivers at UNC from 1988-95, and quarterbacks coach Mike O'Cain was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach there in 2000.
