Kendric Burney was only two years old in 1990 when a group of young Cleveland musicians launched a recording and touring career under the band name, The Rude Boys. The group's array of soulful ballads and "new-jack-swing" caught the attention of a Tar Heel cornerback named Thomas Smith, who in 1992 borrowed the band's name as a position moniker for the Carolina defensive secondary.
