Final drive brings out best in Yates, teammates

Monday, December 12, 2011

John Shoop, the offensive coordinator at North Carolina, chuckled earlier in the month when asked about the mobility of his former pupil, Texans rookie quarterback T.J. Yates. “People said he couldn’t run,” Shoop said. “But he has great short area quickness. He’ll buy time in the pocket.” Despite insisting afterwards that he looked “slow,” Yates showed off his wheels Sunday, converting a 3rd-and-15 with 44 seconds left by scrambling 17 yards against the Bengals.
