Fireballing Bard gets rave review

's major league debut last night met the soaring expectations he created during spring training and the season's first month and a half. He fired two scoreless innings, allowing a single and a walk and striking out one. The strikeout came against Mike Napoli, the first batter he faced. Bard threw three fastballs. They whizzed at Napoli's letters or higher. Napoli swung and missed at all three. The pitch speeds, in order, were 94, 95, and 97 miles per hour on the Angel Stadium scoreboard radar gun.
