Doc Blanchard more than football hero

Doc Blanchard chose to play football at North Carolina partly because the Tar Heels were coached by his mother's cousin, . Blanchard played on the freshman team at UNC in 1942, when NCAA rules still prevented freshmen from playing for the varsity. He was turned down by a Navy V-12 unit at the end of his freshman season because of his weight and poor vision. He enlisted in the Army and served until securing an appointment to West Point.
