North Carolina's problems rushing the football and getting significant gains on first down appear to go hand in hand. The failure of North Carolina's running backs on first down has made quarterback Matt Baker more of a target on second and third down. Defenders aren't concerned about the run, so play-action fakes don't keep them from rushing Baker.
